Don't Skip This Part After Sexy Time
Share
Have you ever had a really connected, intimate moment with someone and then five minutes later you're both staring at your phones, somebody's looking for their underwear, and the other person is asking, "Did you lock the front door?" Real life comes back QUICK.
We spend a lot of time talking about everything that happens before intimacy. Building anticipation. Getting in the mood. Finding what feels good. Trying something new. But what happens afterward doesn't get nearly as much attention. And that's where aftercare comes in.
So... What Is Aftercare?
You may have heard the word "aftercare" used in conversations about kink or BDSM, but aftercare isn't reserved for especially adventurous nights.
At its simplest, aftercare is just taking a little time after intimacy or solo play to take care of yourself and each other before immediately jumping back into regular life.
That might mean cuddling for ten minutes. It could be getting a glass of water, taking a shower together, grabbing a warm washcloth, checking in with each other, or laughing about the thing that absolutely did NOT go according to plan.
There's no official aftercare checklist you have to follow. The whole idea is simply creating a softer landing after the fun.
Aftercare Can Look Different Depending on the Fun
This is one of the things I think gets missed when we talk about aftercare. What feels good afterward can depend quite a bit on what you were doing beforehand.
After vaginal play, you might want to freshen up and give that area a little TLC. After anal play, cleanup and comfort might be higher on the priority list. If spanking, restraints, impact play, or other kinkier activities were involved, your skin or body might appreciate some attention afterward.
And yes, solo play counts too.
That's one reason I was excited to add some new aftercare products to the site. After VJay Play, After Anal Play, After Kink Play, After Spank Gel, and After Bate are all made with different types of post-play care in mind.
You don't need every product for every encounter. The point is that aftercare isn't one-size-fits-all. You can choose what makes sense based on what you did, what your body likes, and what would make you feel good afterward.
Don't Forget the Practical Stuff
Sometimes aftercare is sweet and romantic. Sometimes it's handing someone a wipe and asking, "Water?" Both count.
Keeping a few essentials nearby can make cleanup much easier, especially when you're already comfortable and the last thing you want to do is go rummaging through the bathroom cabinets.
Personal wipes, toy cleaner, aftercare products, a towel, water, and even a protective throw can all make the transition afterward a little easier.
And while we're talking practical, don't forget about the toys. If something needs to be cleaned after use, take care of it according to the manufacturer's cleaning instructions before putting it away. Future You will appreciate not discovering a questionable bedside-drawer situation later.
Check In Before You Check Out
Aftercare isn't only about cleanup. There's an emotional side to it too. People don't necessarily want the same thing after intimacy. One person might want to be wrapped around their partner like a koala while the other wants a little space to cool down and decompress. Neither response is wrong, which is why asking can be a whole lot easier than guessing.
Try something as simple as:
- "Do you want to cuddle or do you need a little space?"
- "Can I grab you some water?"
- "How are you feeling?"
- "Was there anything you really loved?"
- "Is there anything you'd want to do differently next time?"
This doesn't need to turn into a post-game performance review. You're just checking in with each other while everything is still fresh. Those conversations can also make future intimacy better because you're learning what your partner enjoys before you're expected to remember it the next time.
Solo Aftercare Is Still Aftercare
If you're enjoying some solo time, you don't have to skip this part just because there's nobody else in the room.
Clean up your toys. Grab some water. Take a shower. Use an aftercare or body product that feels good. Get comfortable under a blanket and give yourself a few minutes before immediately grabbing your phone or moving on to whatever is next.
After Bate is one of the new products specifically geared toward that post-solo-play part of the routine, but your version of aftercare can be as simple or elaborate as you want it to be.
You took some time to do something that felt good. You can take another few minutes to enjoy the landing too.
The Fun Doesn't Have to End Abruptly
Aftercare doesn't have to be serious, complicated, or reserved for a particular kind of intimacy. Sometimes it's cuddling. Sometimes it's skin care. Sometimes it's cleanup. Sometimes it's talking about what you loved, and sometimes it's lying there laughing together. It's really just another way of paying attention to how you and your partner feel.
Intimacy isn't only about how you start or what happens in the middle. How you leave each other feeling afterward matters too. So next time, don't rush off quite so quickly. Check in. Get comfortable. Take care of the practical stuff. Stay close for a few extra minutes if that feels good. Then you can worry about where your underwear went.
