Stay a Little Longer

When was the last time you had a date that didn't involve a reservation, a screen, or the phrase, "What do you want to do?"

Life has a funny way of turning us into creatures of habit. We order from the same restaurants, watch the same shows, sit in the same spots on the couch, and tell ourselves we'll do something different next weekend. Then somehow, next weekend looks suspiciously similar to the one before it.

There's nothing wrong with having your favorite routines, but sometimes the best way to feel more connected isn't planning something bigger. It's doing something just different enough to get you out of autopilot.

The Dates You Remember Usually Aren't the Expensive Ones

Think about some of your favorite memories together. Chances are, they aren't all fancy dinners, expensive trips, or perfectly planned evenings.

They're probably the random nights you ended up talking for hours. Watching the sunset from the back of a truck. Sitting outside listening to live music. Finding a quiet spot at the beach. Lying under the stars pretending either of you actually knows anything about constellations.

Those moments stick with us because nobody is watching the clock or worrying about what comes next. You're comfortable enough to slow down and actually enjoy being together.

Comfort Changes the Entire Mood

There's something about getting comfortable that makes people linger a little longer. When you're not worried about where you're sitting, whether you're cold, or how quickly you need to move on to the next thing, there's room for conversation to happen naturally.

That's one reason I love keeping a good blanket or protective throw around. Toss it in the car and suddenly you have everything you need for a picnic, an outdoor concert, a sunset date, a night by the fire, or whatever spontaneous idea sounds fun that day.

It doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes snacks, a cozy place to sit, and nowhere else you need to be is the entire date.

Get Out of Your Normal Routine

You don't need to plan an elaborate adventure to make something feel different. Drive somewhere you've never watched the sunset. Grab takeout and eat it outside instead of at your kitchen table. Find a local park you've never visited. Put a blanket in the backyard and leave your phones inside.

Even changing the setting can change the conversation. You're suddenly not staring at the television, thinking about the dishes in the sink, or sitting in the exact same place where you spend every other evening.

A little change of scenery can be enough to remind you that spending time together can still feel like dating.

Put the Phones Away for an Hour

This might actually be the hardest part of the entire date.

Leave your phones in the car, put them on Do Not Disturb, or tuck them somewhere you won't automatically reach for them every three minutes. You don't need an elaborate list of conversation starters either. Talk about everything. Talk about nothing. Tell ridiculous stories. People watch. Make plans. Ask each other questions you haven't asked in years.

The point is simply to give each other your attention without constantly being interrupted by everything else competing for it.

Make the Memory

The goal isn't planning the perfect date. It's slowing down long enough to create a memory together.

Pack your favorite snacks. Grab a cozy blanket. Find somewhere new to watch the sunset. Stay until the stars come out. Talk a little longer than you planned to.

The moments we remember most usually aren't the expensive ones. They're the ones where we stayed a little longer, talked a little more, laughed a little harder, and remembered why we like spending time together in the first place.

And if the date goes really well... you can always make a few more memories when you get home. 😏
